How Bioengineering Will Change Us

The Leonard Lopate Show | Mar 31, 2017

Journalist Adam Piore joins us to discuss his book The Body Builders: Inside the Science of the Engineered Human, which explores the field of bioengineering. Piore reveals how human bodies can be rebuilt and augmented in countless ways. He’ll be joined by Pat Fletcher, the subject a chapter titled, “The Woman Who Can See With Her Ears.” After losing both of her eyes in an industrial accident, she learned of a device that converts the pixels in pictures into a pastiche of sounds. Pat's brain learned to recognize the "soundscapes" and route them to her visual cortex, which enables her to see everything from mountains to the patterns in wallpaper.
