Aurelio Martinez is one of the leading musicians in the Garifuna community – a coastal Central American group descended from enslaved people from West Africa and the indigenous Caribbean inhabitants, who live along the coasts of Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras. They have their own language, culture, and music, and while Aurelio and his band stay true to Garifuna roots, they also make music that reflects the community today. Aurelio, as he’s called on some of his records, and the band Garifuna Soul perform Thursday, Dec. 16, at Le Poisson Rouge.
