Board Mulling Wage Hike For Fast Food Workers Meets in NYC

A board created by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to consider a minimum wage increase for New York's fast-food workers is meeting in New York City.

The Wage Board is scheduled to hear from workers, labor experts and business owners at its meeting Monday at New York University.

The board is expected to recommend whether to raise the minimum wage for the fast-food industry later this summer. Any increase would need the approval of Cuomo's labor commissioner, but would not need legislative approval.

New York's minimum wage is now $8.75 and is set to rise to $9 at year's end.

Fast-food workers say the current minimum wage hasn't kept up with the cost of living.

Business owners object, saying an increase could force them to raise prices or reduce hours for employees.
