Branford Marsalis – "Deep Moaning Blues" (Weekly Music Roundup)

You may have heard that Netflix has released the film version of August Wilson’s play, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Both Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman are getting plaudits for their performances, but another star of the movie is the soundtrack, created by sax player Branford Marsalis. Using a 17-piece band – along with singer Maxayn Lewis, who does Ma Rainey’s vocals in the film – Marsalis effectively recreates the sound of the 1920s. His score begins with his arrangement of Ma Rainey’s own “Deep Moaning Blues,” and it's part of our Weekly Music Roundup.
