The Bulldozer: America's Tool For Destruction, Progress & Disenfranchisement

The Takeaway | Apr 12, 2016

Thousands of developments drastically changed the urban and suburban landscape in post-World War II America. And perhaps no other machine was more vital to America's post-war vision than the bulldozer.

The machine represents a symbol of American clearance, progress, and destruction. A new book "Bulldozer: Demolition and Clearance of the Postwar Landscape" by Francesca Russello Ammon, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, unearths the bulldozer's history, and complicates our adoration for a machine and a time that left so many disenfranchised in a mission of progress.
