Bushwick Warehouse Is Mecca for Climate Activists
There's a flurry of preparation underway for the People's Climate March on Sunday, which is expected to draw more than 100,000 people. At a three-story warehouse in Bushwick, Brooklyn, generations of environmental activists have come together to put the finishing touches on some unusual artwork.
O'Ja Vincent, 36, manages the space. On Friday, he was directing a group from California to hang their banner outside to dry, to make room for other painters. He said the various groups have been working on more than just posters and banners. "They have illuminated bicycle riders, so they have LED lights going on, they have swordfish bike fixtures, which are like metal triangles that are braces for huge swordfish," he said.
And it's not always harmonious at the People's Climate March Space.
"People do get myopic, people are battling for space and you wouldn't think it would be like that, but when everybody's under pressure it gets a little difficult."
He hopes after the march, the space will continue to be used for environmental activism.
