The Calvary Nightingales – Keep On Pushing (Weekly Music Roundup)

The Calvary Nightingales are just one of many bands, who'll be part of an upcoming compilation of obscure but occasionally awesome gospel soul recordings from Memphis in the 1970s. Called The Last Shall Be First: the JCR Records Story, Volume 1, it's set to be released in late September via Bible & Tire, the sacred soul music label started by Fat Possum's Bruce Watson. The producer of these recordings, Pastor Juan D. Shipp, was also a radio DJ, whose democratized sounds were released as both D-Vine or JCR Records (perhaps the more raw and rough of the two seventies labels.) As Michael Hurtt writes in the liner notes to the compilation, "it was the very essence of gospel soul at its finest." One of the first of these preview tracks is "Keep On Pushing" by the Calvary Nightingales, and it's part of our Weekly Music Roundup
