The Campaign Jukebox: Hello Lyndon

New Standards | Nov 5, 2016

In 1963 the title song from Jerry Herman's hit musical "Hello Dolly" was everywhere! It even made its way to the campaign trail in 1964. Candidates from both parties tried to adapt it. Democratic nominee, Lyndon B Johnson, had "Hello Lyndon." Republican nominee, Barry Goldwater, had "Hello Barry." However, it was LBJ, who had the blessing of the songwriter and producer. Listen to hear how it all unfolded!

The Campaign Jukebox looks at the history of the campaign song, uncovering how it all began and what made the campaign song necessary.
