One of the most controversial areas in climate science today is geoengineering: developing technologies that could scrub carbon from the atmosphere or reflect sunlight away from the planet. A report recently issued by the National Research Council is calling for more federal funding for research into geoengineering projects, pushing the idea further into the mainstream.
