An aide to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo who was shot in the crossfire between two gangs hours before New York City's West Indian Day parade has died.

Police say Carey Gabay died Wednesday from his injuries. His family earlier had said he was declared brain dead.

The 43-year-old Harvard University-educated lawyer served as first deputy general counsel at the Empire State Development Corp.

He was shot in the head during a predawn party celebrating the parade Sept. 7. He was walking with his brother near the Brooklyn parade route at 3:40 a.m. when he was shot.

The shooting was one of several outbursts of violence in the neighborhoods surrounding the parade.

City Councilman Jumaane Williams said the incident should prompt local lawmakers to address gun culture more forcefully.
