A Super Surprise For Young Patients

Features | Jul 23, 2014

Early Wednesday morning, more than a hundred kids eagerly awaited the arrival of their favorite superheroes - one little boy even wore his own Spider-man costume. The children are patients at the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, run by New York Presbyterian, and the masked men and women are window washers employed by the company Sparkle Maintenance who dressed up for the occasion.

This is the first time that New York Presbyterian has surprised their young patients in this way, but they are following in the footsteps of other hospitals who have staged similar events to boost patient and family morale.

Kevin Hammerman, the Chief Operating Officer of the hospital who helped plan the visit, said that the smiles of patients and their parents shows how much they enjoyed the surprise. But the window washers and hospital staff were emotionally affected too. "One small girl actually thought an administrator dressed as Wonderwoman had real superpowers," he said. "It brought [the administrator] to tears."

After today's success, the hospital plans on organizing similar events and festivities for the future.
