'Christian America' as a Counter to the New Deal

Kevin Kruse, a professor of history at Princeton University and the author of One Nation Under God: How Corporate America Invented Christian America (Basic Books, 2015), says the idea that America has always been an officially Christian nation dates back no further than the 1930s, when a coalition of businesmen and religious leaders promoted "freedom under God" in opposition to the New Deal.
