Collecting or Hoarding? Why We're So Attached to Stuff

The Leonard Lopate Show | May 27, 2016

This is a rebroadcast of an interview that originally aired on April 7, 2016.

Tchotkes, clutter, scrap, memorabilia, collectibles.... How many names do we have for all the stuff we accumulate? We're holding onto so much that we're inventing stuff to hold stuff. And much of that stuff is junk. Journalist Alison Stewart investigates our tendencies to hoard and collect in Junk: Digging Through America’s Love Affair with Stuff. Stewart traveled the country investigating yard sales, box-filled basements and pawn shops to find out why Americans can't stop adding to the piles.
