Concern Over Rise in Anti-Semitism in Wake of Monsey Stabbings

WNYC News | Dec 30, 2019

Five people were stabbed at a Hanukkah celebration in Rockland County Saturday night, marking the 13th anti-Semitic incident in New York in the last three weeks.

In response, Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio have deployed additional police patrols to Jewish neighborhoods across the city and state. But some leaders are calling on officials to do more to protect local Jewish communities.

"There's been a drumbeat that has really gone unanswered while those more deadly more violent attacks have gotten national and international attention," said Jodi Rudoren, editor-in-chief of The Forward. She was speaking with WNYC's Shumita Basu on Morning Edition.

"Virtually every week for the last several months, we've seen beatings of visible Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn and other neighborhoods," Rudoren said.
