Cops Kill Man on Busy Midtown Street

WNYC News | May 18, 2016

NYPD officers fired nine shots on a crowded Midtown street around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, killing a knife-wielding suspect and grazing a bystander.

Police say the 46-year-old white man got into a loud argument with a clerk in a nearby grocery store. Workers pushed the man outside, where a uniformed cop wrestled him to the ground.

But he popped back up with an eight-inch knife and lunged at cops who came to help. A sergeant and an officer opened fire.

“You can imagine a Manhattan morning, plenty of people there and plenty of cameras, so it appears right now that it is justified,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce.

Commissioner William Bratton said he watched video of the incident and it was clear the officers were being attacked. “It unfolded very, very quickly,” he said.

The injured bystander was taken to the hospital. Police said her injuries are minor.
