Court weighs potentially landmark NJ school segregation case

WNYC News | Mar 2, 2022

A coalition of nonprofits is suing New Jersey for allowing the segregation of the state's schools. After a four-year legal battle, both sides return to court on Thursday.

The potentially landmark case argues that New Jersey has the responsibility to remedy the disparities that are among the worst in the nation. The suit says state officials allowed this to happen by requiring students to attend schools in the municipalities where they live, in a state rife with residential segregation.

One majority nonwhite South Jersey district, which intervened in the case, argues New Jersey needs to mandate regionalization plans to force districts to take students from other towns.
