Courts across the United States use algorithm-based risk assessment software for criminal sentencing. At best, these systems are only sometimes accurate in predicting the likelihood of recidivism. At worst, they mimic the same subjective human biases courts hope to avoid. Brooke talks with Julia Angwin, a senior reporter at ProPublica, about the problematic "theories of criminality" reflected in algorithm-based criminal justice.
