Nashville’s Crys Matthews has been called “the next Woody Guthrie.” Of course Woody Guthrie was white, male, and straight; Crys Matthews is… not.  She is, though, a fine songwriter with a keen eye for social justice, so the comparison works where it matters. Matthews is part of this year’s Brooklyn Americana Music Festival – which fills the Red Hook section of Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Bridge Park with blues, folk, string band, and bluegrass music all weekend. All of the events are free except for tonight’s opening concert at Jalopy, which is a suggested donation show. Crys Matthews plays at the opening concert of this weekend’s Brooklyn Americana Music Festival at Jalopy on June 23.
