The Price Workers Pay For Alabama's Jobs Boom

The Leonard Lopate Show | Mar 30, 2017

Bloomberg Businessweek reporter Peter Waldman joins us to discuss his recent cover story, “Inside Alabama’s Auto Jobs Boom: Cheap Wages, Little Training, Crushed Limbs.” Waldman investigates the burgeoning auto parts industry in the rural American South, particularly in Alabama, which has been referred to as the “New Detroit.” While factory growth in the South was hailed as a savior after the decline of the textile industry, Waldman looks at the reality of life for factory workers: long hours, 7-day work weeks, low pay, little training, high risk of death or injury and minimal safety regulations.
