De Blasio Voices Concerns on Comcast-Time Warner Merger

WNYC News | Nov 3, 2014

In a letter to the Federal Communications Commission, Mayor de Blasio said he's worried the proposed merger would drive up prices for high speed internet, reduce responsiveness to customer concerns, and limit equal access to content. He said many of those concerns have also been voiced by members of the city's large and growing technology sectors.

"We need to ensure that a Comcast-Time Warner business entity isn't a toll booth on that super highway that prevents everyone from getting on it," said Maya Wiley, counsel to the mayor, in an interview.

It's the second letter de Blasio has sent to the FCC on this subject. Earlier this summer, the mayor called on Comcast to expand access for underserved residents and improve service before merging with Time Warner.

The companies announced plans to merge in February. Their application is now before the FCC for approval.
