“Death and injury on our streets aren't just unconscionable. They're avoidable.” Janette Sadik-Khan on street safety in NYC

WNYC's Morning Edition is taking a long look at the safe streets policy Vision Zero: what it has—and hasn't—accomplished in the last ten years. We're also looking back at some of the work that laid the foundation for that policy change.

Janette Sadik-Khan led New York City's Department of Transportation from 2007 to 2013, under then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg. During her time there, the city gained bike lanes and bus lanes, pedestrian plazas, and the Citi Bike program.

She spoke with WNYC Morning Edition host Michael Hill about that shift, and about her views on Vision Zero in New York City and the political will to move it forward.
