Ecuadorian New Yorkers Organize to Help Earthquake Victims

WNYC News | Apr 17, 2016

Ecuadorian New Yorkers are planning an emergency response to the catastrophic earthquake that struck the country on Saturday.

Business and nonprofit leaders will meet with representatives from the Ecuadorian government at its consulate in Midtown Manhattan Monday evening.

Miguel Flores, one of the informal group's leaders, said it'll decide how best to help Ecuador in the aftermath of the earthquake.

"Food, water, some money," Flores said. "These people have situations like no homes, or are losing relatives or family members. This is really sad for our community."

Four out of ten people of Ecuadorian origin in the U.S. live in New York City, according to The Pew Research Center.
