How Hannibal, his Army and their Elephants Crossed the Alps

The Leonard Lopate Show | Jul 5, 2017

Journalist Franz Lidz talks about his recent piece for Smithsonian magazine called, “How (and Where) Did Hannibal Cross the Alps?” Lidz met with a scientist who believes he's solved a 2,000-year-old mystery: the route that the Carthaginian general and his famous battle elephants took across the Alps. He explores the genetic material, animal remains and waste unearthed in bogs and sediment which point to the route.
