Ensemble Signal Plays Steve Reich at Brookfield Place, Part 2

Gig Alerts | Oct 15, 2019

Steve Reich is the quintessential New York composer. It’s not just that he was born and raised and still lives here in New York – it’s that the rhythm and the sounds of the city have informed his work, sometimes quite literally. In 1985 he wrote a piece, "New York Counterpoint," for solo clarinet with up to 11 other clarinet parts on tape. It has the steady rhythmic pulse that characterizes Reich’s music, but it also has a jaunty swing that recalls the New York of the Jazz Age. Members of Ensemble Signal perform "New York Counterpoint," and three other Reich works in another free New Sounds Live concert Wed. night, Oct. 16, at Brookfield Place.
