Derek Piotr sings and plays guitar, but he’s primarily a folklorist, archiving songs and stories and poems that he collects from ordinary people. On his recent album The Devil Knows How, he performs traditional folk songs, records them as if he were out in the field on non-professional equipment, and then has them restored as if they were old sonic artifacts that he’d discovered. The result is a sound that is almost impossible to place in time. Derek Piotr plays Nov. 12, as part of the Folkstorm series at Public Records in Brooklyn.
