'The Force' Follows Oakland PD's Struggles To Reform

The Leonard Lopate Show | Sep 20, 2017

Emmy-winning journalist Peter Nicks discusses the two years he spent filming the Oakland Police Department as part of his new documentary “The Force.” Nicks embedded with the department while it was working to improve relations with its largely black community following widespread criticism and protests. But, as it tried to reform its image, the department faced a series of surprising challenges and scandals. "The Force" won the Sundance Director’s prize for US Doc this year.

"The Force" opens at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema (143 E. Houston Street, between 1st and 2nd Aves.) on Sept. 22. Director Peter Nicks and Ben McBride, who appears in the film, will hold Q&As following the 7:05 p.m. screenings on Sept. 22 and Sept. 23.
