Former NYC DOE Official Charged With A Sex Crime Lied During Background Checks

A new investigation found that a former top official with New York City's Department of Education who was charged with a child sex crime lied during background checks.

David Hay was deputy chief of staff to School Chancellor, Richard A. Carranza, when he was arrested for trying to arrange sex in Wisconsin with a cop posing as a 14-year-old boy. He was immediately fired.

Local investigators said the case brought to light problems with background checks at city agencies. They said Hay lied a dozen times on education department forms, and concealed he was forced to resign as a principal in Wisconsin. The resignation was not because of sexual misconduct.

Still, officials said he should have gone through a more thorough review. Hay's file was a part of a backlog of more than 5,000 cases.
