Galya Bisengalieva via National Sawdust Digital Discovery (Live Stream)
Thurs., Feb. 25. 6PM EST.

The violinist, electronic musician, and composer Galya Bisengalieva is based in London, but she was born and raised in Kazakhstan. Her album called Aralkum was inspired by a man-made environmental catastrophe in that former Soviet republic. A Soviet irrigation plan went horribly wrong, and in 40 years the Aral Sea, once the fourth largest lake on Earth, lost 90% of its area, leaving behind a desert, the Aralkum. Bisengalieva’s album tells the story in both music and a series of beautiful but unsettling films. Galya Bisengalieva. She plays a live streaming set tonight for National Sawdust, joined by fellow Kazakh artist and filmmaker Sana Serkebaeva.
