Indian-American vocalist Ganavya – full name Ganavya Doraiswamy – is the inheritor of many traditions, a virtuosic vocalist, composer, and scholar. She can take a poem, sometimes a thousand years old or perhaps something from a current-day poet, including Ganavya herself, and turn it into something like a musical prayer. She presents these concerts under the heading Let’s Go Out And Play, and you can hear that sense of play, and also of something spiritual at work, in a song called Nithakam, which you might know under another name…“Summertime,” the George Gershwin tune. The singer Ganavya plays on Thurs., July 22 at Roulette.
