Gateway Program's Portal Bridge Replacement Gets Cash Infusion

WNYC News | May 26, 2020

The Portal Bridge in New Jersey used by NJ Transit and Amtrak is getting nearly $92 million in federal funds. It's one of the first projects in the Gateway program to improve service between New York and New Jersey.

Now the project can move forward, New Jersey representatives say. Pre-construction on the 2.3 mile-long Portal Bridge has been on and off for for several years.

The area is a frequent choke point for trains coming into New York, because the old bridge gets stuck in it's raised position and needs a worker with a sledgehammer to shut it.

The project still needs another $811 million. If grants keep coming, construction on the two-track bridge over the Hackensack River could begin early next year.
