Happy Birthday, Duke Ellington

Wednesday afternoon, we are celebrating the 116th birth anniversary of America's greatest ambassador of music and jazz - Duke Ellington. For over 50 years, as a bandleader, pianist and cultural icon, Ellington transcended genre - or, as he put it, was "beyond category."

Whether writing for small group, big band, or orchestra the Ellington sound was an integral part of 20th Century America. His dedication to music was legendary. His autobiography was entitled "Music Is My Mistress," and his last words were said to be, "Music is how I live, why I live and how I will be remembered."
