Hope for Democrats in Texas?

The Brian Lehrer Show | Jan 21, 2016

As the last person to run a successful statewide campaign for a Democrat, Mary Beth Rogers offers her strategy to make Texas a swing state.

Mary Beth Rogers, a professor, public servant, writer, political organizer, historian and now the author of Turning Texas Blue: What It Will Take to Break the GOP Grip on America's Reddest State (St. Martin's Press, 2016), explained the importance of paying attention to "the everydayness" of people's lives and addressing those issues.

"Those are some universal themes that reach across racial and ethnic lines. And I think certainly in the past two gubernatorial races in Texas, the Democrats have not made an effort to connect with voters where they live on those key issues."

Rogers says Texas democrats need to "get their act together" and not just wait for the exploding population of Hispanics in the state to bring Democratic votes.
