How to Apply to a Dual Language Program in NYC Schools

SchoolBook | Feb 2, 2015

For families wanting to enroll their kindergartener in a dual-language program next school year, it's important to note that there is a slight change in how to apply. In short: Get in touch with the school directly.

(It's not too late to sign up for SchoolBook's emails which are chock full of tips and info about the kindergarten application process.)

Parents no longer apply to the specialized program on the general kindergarten application — the one where families rank up to 12 school options. This application can be filled out online, over the phone or at a Family Welcome Center.

This year, families first must tick a box on the application expressing interest in the dual language program. Only after the child gets a kindergarten placement at the school, can he or she apply to the dual language program, working directly with the school.

The change allows school staff to maintain the right mix of native English speakers and English Language Learners, ideally an even split between the two groups.

Families that submit their application by the Feb. 13 deadline will hear about school placements in April. But they may not know if their child was accepted to the school's dual language class until later, possibly over the summer. Admission to the program is not guaranteed.

The city currently has about 150 dual language programs. It plans to expand 15 existing programs in the fall and open 25 new ones, including the city's first dual language classes in Japanese and Hebrew.
