How A Black Theater Thrived In Manhattan 200 Years Ago

This month marks the 200th anniversary of the first all-Black production of Shakespeare in the United States. The performance from the African Theater took place in Lower Manhattan. Maya Philips, critic-at-large for The New York Times, spoke with WNYC host Sean Carlson about the history of the theater company and what it means for Black theater today.
