This week, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai announced plans to call a December vote regarding the future of net neutrality, a 2015 Obama-era regulation which ensured that Internet service providers treated all content equally through networks across the country.

Proponents of net neutrality argue that a deregulation of the industry would result in tiered pricing and throttled speed. Chairman Pai, as well as large telecommunications firms, believe that regulations prevent investment into infrastructure expansion.

David Choffnes is an assistant professor of computer science at Northeastern University. He joins The Takeaway to discuss how the FCC's proposed deregulation would affect individual consumers and small businesses.

This segment is hosted by Todd Zwillich.
