Inmate, 18, Hangs Himself in Rikers Island Cell

WNYC News | Jun 11, 2015

An 18-year-old New York City inmate has hanged himself in a Rikers Island jail cell the same day he was to see a psychiatrist.

Internal jail documents reviewed by The Associated Press show Kenan Davis was pronounced dead just after 1 p.m. Wednesday in the George Motchan Detention Center, one of 10 Rikers facilities.

He was admitted into custody last Friday on a charge of violating parole. Contact information for his attorney and family weren't immediately available.

A city official told the AP Davis had no history of suicide attempts and appeared to be mentally healthy though somewhat down about being in jail when visited by a social worker Monday.

The official wasn't permitted to discuss an ongoing investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.
