Sax player and bandleader Kamasi Washington has become one of the biggest names in jazz – mainly by playing with some of the biggest names in hip hop. The LA musician attracted wide acclaim for his work with Kendrick Lamar, and when he released his album The Epic in 2015, it more than lived up to its title. Nearly three hours long, Washington’s epic collection drew on Afrofuturism with elements of soul, funk and R&B, as well as covers of jazz and classical standards. His follow-up, Heaven and Earth, also in three volumes, included an arrangement of music from the Bruce Lee movie Fists of Fury. Kamasi Washington kicks off the new season of BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! on Wed., June 8, at the Prospect Park bandshell.
