Kavita Shah is a New York based singer whose repertoire includes her own songs, jazz standards, Stevie Wonder covers, and the songs of the late Cesaria Evora. Evora was the leading singer in the style known as morna, a bluesy, emotional music from the Cape Verde Islands, a longtime Portuguese colony off the coast of West Africa. Evora died in 2011 but Kavita Shah is keeping her music alive with her new album called Cape Verdean Blues. She joins me Wednesday night for a New Sounds Live program of these Cape Verdean blues – at National Sawdust.
