The Latest Effort to Let New Jersey Drivers Pump Their Own Gas Is Sputtering to a Stop

Full-service gas is up there with the Taylor Ham/Pork Roll debate as one of the most New Jersey Things Ever. For 73 years, drivers have been barred from pumping their own gas, thanks to a law requiring all gas stations have attendants to top off tanks. But the latest effort to introduce at least some self-service pumps to the Garden State is running into a serious speedbump: an overwhelming majority of New Jersey residents would prefer to keep things the way they are. And the state's most powerful lawmaker agrees.
