NYPD Detective Holder's Killer Gets a Life Sentence

The man who killed an NYPD Officer in October 2015 will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Judge Michael Obus today sentenced Tyrone Howard to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Howard, who has a lengthy criminal record and unsuccessful stints in drug treatment programs, shot and killed Detective Randolph Holder after firing a gun on a residential street, stealing a bike and trying to flee from the cops.

More than 100 police officers attended the sentencing, filling the seats and standing along the wall in the cavernous Manhattan courtroom.

Judge Obus called the shooting an attack on the entire community and the law. Holder’s father, Randolph Holder Sr., said his son came more than 2,000 miles from Guyana to become an NYPD officer and make a difference.

Patrick Lynch, Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President, praised the judge and Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

“We're guaranteed that this monster would never ever set foot in daylight on our streets again. When he looks at the sun it will be through bars,” Lynch said outside the courtroom.
