Lily & Madeleine: A Folk Duo Wise Beyond Their Years

Soundcheck | Nov 4, 2014

While still only in their teens, you could call Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz old souls. The two sisters, who record under their first names, create haunting folk pop songs that hint at a wisdom beyond their years -- Madeleine is 20 years old, while Lily is 17. The Indiana natives were first discovered on YouTube after an original song and video caught the attention of Asthmatic Kitty Records and Sufjan Stevens. The two are now on a mission to write three albums in three years.

Full of enchanting melodies and angelic close harmonies, the duo's second album in that series, Fumes, is a graceful and sprawling showcase for Lily and Madeleine's intimate musical bond -- and their keen ear for songwriting. That's especially true on "Can't Admit It," a song that invokes images of a late night phone call between teens, but can just as easily be a midnight talk between matured lovers. It's that skill for writing about love and pain in equally specific and universal ways that makes Lily and Madeleine such a promising and inviting act to follow.

Set List:

  • "Rabbit"
  • "Can't Admit It"
  • "Fumes"
