Lizz Wright – "Old Man" (Weekly Music Roundup)

Lizz Wright first gained acclaim singing Billy Holiday songs, but her roots are in gospel and soul. Over the years she’s become a kind of curator of American songs, ranging from Bob Dylan and Ray Charles to contemporary groups like the Birds of Chicago. During the pandemic, Wright rediscovered the tape of a 2018 concert she did with her band in Berlin, and she’s now released that set as a new album called Holding Space. It’s a typically wide-ranging affair, including the old gospel classic “Walk With Me Lord,”  and this slow-burning rendition of Neil Young’s “Old Man.” Lizz Wright's new version of this old song is part of our Weekly Music Roundup.
