The Activists, Lawyers and Lovers Who Made the Case for Marriage Equality

In July 2013, Jim Obergefell married his partner of 20 years, John Arthur, just three months before John's death from ALS. The state of Ohio refused to recognize the marriage or put Obergerfell's last name on John's death certificate. This is how Obergefell became the plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court marriage equality case Obergefell v. Hodges. He, along with Debbie Cenziper, an investigative reporter for The Washington Post, discuss their book Love Wins: The Lovers and Lawyers Who Fought the Landmark Case for Marriage Equality. The case involved 30 equality plaintiffs from four states, and the book details the stories of the lawyers, activists and couples behind the Supreme Court’s historic ruling in favor of same sex marriage last June.
