#3468: With Ludovico Einaudi

The Italian keyboardist and composer Ludovico Einaudi joins John Schaefer to present selections from his record, “In a Time Lapse,” recorded in a wooden room in a monastery near Verona, Italy. For this New Sounds, listen to selections from that record, as well as a liberal sampling of his music; from solo keyboard works to pieces featuring forward-thinking violinist Daniel Hope, to collaborations with kora player Ballake Sissoko and duduk master Djivan Gasparian from Armenia.

Hear the influence of the ecstatic trance tradition at work, both drawing from Einaudi’s experiences with the Italian tarantella and Mande music (Mali.) Ludovico Einaudi even performed at the Festival in the Desert in Mali some years ago and when he is not on tour, he lives on his family’s vineyard in Italy.

Immigrants' stories have been unfolding on an off-Broadway stage in an uncommon way. One is of a doctor in her 40s who fled Zimbabwe. Another featured a Colombian woman who regretted leaving her homeland for the United States.
