Lumps and Bumps: The Avant-Garde Designer Rei Kawakubo

WNYC News | May 10, 2017

The spring show at the Met Museum's Costume Institute is highlighting the work of fashion designer Rei Kawakubo.

She's the creative force behind the label Comme des Garçons, and is known for designs that redefine the body's shape, as in what's known as her "lumps and bumps" collection.

"It's sort of her witty commentary on how fashion has always tried to reshape the body in different ways," said Véronique Hyland, senior fashion news editor for New York Magazine.

In this interview, host Richard Hake talks to Hyland about Kawakubo's work, and the Met exhibition.
