Morocco is home to a centuries-old tradition of Gnawa music – music for healing and trance. A traditional Gnawa ceremony can run through the entire night, and features singing, acrobatic leaps, and the bass-heavy sounds of the sintir. Majid Bekkas is from Morocco, and he has spent many years combining the sounds of Gnawa music with Western blues, jazz, even electronic dance music. He sings, he plays the sintir, but he also knows you have to get up in the morning so he doesn’t play all night. Majid Bekkas and his Gnawa Blues Band play tonight at the Sultan Room in Brooklyn.
