Mames Babagenush at DROM
July 20. 7PM. $20-25.

Klezmer music, sometimes referred to as “Jewish soul” music, has a jazzy, New York sound – but its roots are in Eastern and especially Southeastern Europe. One place that is not known for klezmer music is Denmark, but that’s where the band Mames Babagenush is from. Only one of them is Jewish – the rest are just fans of the style’s catchy rhythms and its mournful, lyrical ballads. They’ve been at this since 2004, and during that time, they’ve honed their own distinctive, perhaps slightly Nordic, take on klezmer music. The band Mames Babagenush plays July 20 at the club DROM
