Cellist Maya Beiser 'Uncovers' Rock Classics

Soundcheck | Sep 2, 2014

The intersection between classical music and rock is nothing new at this point, but in the hands of Maya Beiser, there's still room for re-imagination. For the her latest project, the renowned cellist presents a series of covers -- or "uncovers," as she calls them -- re-contextualized as multi-layered, multi-tracked cello performances.

Uncovered showcases songs from an array of blues and classic rock staples -- from Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters to Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Nirvana. And the record is bookended by two Led Zeppelin classics, "Black Dog" and "Kashmir." Accompanied by guests like Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche and Jherek Bischoff, Beiser's stunning impressionist reinterpretations bring out new colors, sounds and rhythms from songs we've likely all heard hundreds of times. And for the classically minded, Beiser's refreshing sonic approach brings life to establishing rock as part of the canon.

Hear Beiser and her classical power trio -- Gyan Riley on bass and Matt Kilmer on drums -- perform in the Soundcheck studio.

Set List:

  • "Black Dog"
