Bass player and songwriter Michael Olatuja grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, spent his teenage years playing on the London jazz scene, and has spent much of his career here in New York, playing with everyone from Diana Ross to Shakira to the band for the Broadway hit Frozen. His latest album, called Lagos Pepper Soup, is a tribute to all three of those cities, and if you look online he’ll show you how to make the actual Lagos Pepper Soup of the title. His music, meanwhile, is a spicy gumbo of jazz, Afrobeat, and funk. Michael Olatuja & Lagos Pepper Soup play on Jan. 16 at Joe’s Pub.
