Microscopic Septet at Smalls Jazz Club
July 12. 6PM and 7:30PM. $40.

In the 80s and 90s, the Microscopic Septet was a familiar band here in New York, known for their fun, inventive blend of big band swing, avant-garde music, and chamber jazz. You may know their theme music for the public radio show Fresh Air. But in recent years, with founding sax player Phillip Johnston living in Australia, performances by the septet have been rare. When they play at Smalls, you can expect to hear favorites from the band’s 40 year repertoire, including an improbable number of songs about lobsters. The Microscopic Septet returns to New York on July 12 at Smalls Jazz Club.
